Luminance revitalization of the MRiT façade at Plac Trzech Krzyży.

In the heart of Warsaw, at Plac Trzech Krzyży, architectural light carries a precise task. It cannot be a random decorative gesture; it must interact with the architecture, respect the character of the elevation, highlight intricate detailing, and ensure visual comfort for the observer.

The façade lighting scheme for the Ministry of Development and Technology (MRiT) presented a challenge where technology had to remain subservient to architecture. The objective was not to deliver a flashy spectacle, but to engineer light that understands the building's identity—its scale, rhythm, materiality, and historical resonance.

Constructed between 1946 and 1949 to a design by Stanisław Bieńkuński and Stanisław Rychłowski, the structure was the first post-WWII government building designed and built in Warsaw. Originally housing the State Economic Planning Commission, it was conceived as a cornerstone of the newly envisioned central administrative district.

Challenges:

The core design challenge lay in balancing visibility with subtlety. A public administration building requires elegant, structured, and visually timeless illumination. Equally critical as the luminaires themselves were the choice of optical distribution, housing finish, and spectral quality of the white light.

The primary technical challenge involved customizing the MODENA luminaires. While standardly available in RGB, this scheme demanded a precisely tailored shade of white light.

Solutions:

 

  • Spectral Customization (RWW vs. RGB):

    A key optimization involved replacing the standard RGB array with a bespoke RWW (Red + Warm White) LED configuration in the MODENA luminaires. Utilizing white LEDs with a strictly calibrated color temperature, augmented by a targeted red spectral component, allowed the luminous intensity distribution to align with the reflective properties of the sandstone elevation. This yielded a high Color Rendering Index ($R_a$ / CRI), preserving the natural depth, texture, and warm undertones of the stone.

  • Structural Camouflage:

    To satisfy stringent heritage preservation requirements, the luminaire housings were finished with a custom RAL 1015 (Light Ivory) powder coating. This provided seamless physical integration into the architectural elements—rendering the hardware virtually imperceptible in daylight without compromising the original geometry of the façade.

  • Digital Lighting Management (DMX):

    System architecture is built on the DMX control protocol, enabling full addressability of individual node points. This allows for smooth dynamic dimming and precise scene setting. The control infrastructure offers flexible programming for various operational profiles (e.g., daily, ceremonial, and state occasion modes) tailored to institutional requirements.

Results:

 

 

  • The implemented architectural lighting scheme serves as a benchmark for responsible night-time asset management.
  • Combining precision optics with intelligent control has yielded a significant reduction in connected load, while enhancing the building's aesthetic presence and civic stature. The illumination improves visual comfort while aligning with sustainability targets by optimizing energy consumption.
  • Through narrow, custom-engineered beam shaping, light output is strictly directed onto designated façade sections, minimizing light spill and skyglow.
  • High-grade solid-state LED components ensure long-term photometric stability and resistance to lumen depreciation over time. Furthermore, the flexibility of the digital DMX interface allows for future integration with the master Building Management System (BMS).
  • Ultimately, this project proves that advanced lighting engineering can serve as a non-invasive conservation tool—merging modern functional performance with complete respect for historic architecture.
