Rozrywka Theatre was established in the 1970s as a music hall – a revue theatre. It is housed in a historic Art Nouveau building that, before the Second World War, was home to the Graf Reden Hotel. The venue required extensive adaptation works, which meant that until 1 January 1985 productions were staged at other locations. On that date, the theatre was taken over by the Department of Culture and Art of the Voivodeship Office in Katowice and began operating in the form we know today.

CHALLENGES

The original 15-year-old theatre lighting installation was beginning to show its age, failing more and more often, causing problems for the staff and, at times, leading to a lack of lighting. The Theatre management also wanted to make the building stand out in the city, so the illumination had to be precise, and the control system became one of the project’s key assumptions.

SOLUTIONS

The new illumination was designed in detail by the LUG team, taking into account lighting calculations, 3D visualisations and the control system design, as well as even the mundane issue of the size of openings in the paving. The installation is durable and energy-efficient, and the control system connected and commissioned by LUG staff allows up to 17 lighting scenes to be set effortlessly, depending on the occasion.

RESULT

Modern RGB luminaires strikingly highlight the theatre’s Art Nouveau façade, creating not only an attractive visual effect, but also strengthening the building’s image as a recognisable and welcoming landmark on the city map. A dedicated design solution showcases architectural details, giving the building a new aesthetic quality. Durable, maintenance-free luminaires reduce servicing costs, and the built-in DMX system enables intuitive management of lighting scenes – tailored to events and occasions. The colourful illumination increases the building’s recognisability in the urban and regional space, making it an attractive meeting place.
