Light that redefines the game, a new spirit at Polonia Stadium

PROJECT SPECIFICATION:

304 luminaires
35 metres mounting height
FIFA&UEFA standards

The Marshal Józef Piłsudski Municipal Stadium at Sportowa 2 Street in Bydgoszcz is a historic, over 100 years old venue. Opened in 1924 by Polish President Stanisław Wojciechowski, even before the war it was the arena for international games, athletics competitions and the Polish Speedway Championships. Today, the facility is the hub of the clubs ŻKS Abramczyk Polonia and KP Polonia, as well as the stage for the prestigious Tauron Speedway Euro Championship, with all competitions regularly broadcast on television.

Ongoing speedway and football competitions require opening the facility in the evening and using artificial lighting. Due to that, the stadium was in need of lighting that would reflect the dynamic rivalries taking place on the field and meet the stringent standards for speedway venues. A comprehensive lighting design and top-quality floodlights were supplied by LUG, where we understand that lighting is not only technology, but also an element of sporting events, providing an entirely new level of thrill.

Challenges:

  • The primary objective was to meet the normative requirements for speedway competitions in Poland, which also included taking into account the new position of the masts on which the luminaires were supposed to be mounted

  • The direction of light and tilt angles of the luminaires had to be set with great precision in order to meet standards, ensuring excellent visibility for competitors and spectators, but also to obtain the best possible conditions for television cameras

  • Furthermore, the lighting should ultimately meet the requirements of both the speedway track and the football pitch in an integrated manner, without compromising on lighting quality

Solutions:

  • The expertise of LUG's commercial project department proved invaluable, as they applied their expertise and knowledge in dealing with sports facilities to create a calculation that ultimately not only met expectations but far exceeded them

  • In order to obtain accurate photometrics, individual geometric data was determined for each of the 304 new luminaires installed on the facility, allowing the luminaires to be precisely aimed in accordance with the prepared design in the next stage

  • Additionally, the optics of the floodlights were specially adapted to the needs of this project by the team Custom from LUG

Results:

The modernisation has taken the stadium to a new level, and there are many aspects where the effects are seen:

  • Post-construction measurements confirmed that the facility not only meets the requirements for speedway competitions, but also achieves FIFA lighting standards, offering a completely new quality of performance for both disciplines speedway and football

  • The players benefited from better visibility and greater safety, while the fans enjoy a more intense visual experience. Every race and every match gained depth, becoming a true spectacle that combines sport with technology. Moreover, the applied PUMA floodlights, controllable in the DMX standard, enable the creation of dynamic lighting scenes that emphasise the opening moments and intensify the stakes of the match.

  • The new lighting also provides a different perspective on the site itself, making it more attractive to international competition hosts and television broadcasters, as well as to fans, who can enjoy sporting events in a whole new light – literally and figuratively
