PROJECT
Research and development of a safe lighting point
Completion: 01.06.2019 - 31.07.2021
Project value: 5 249 832,36 PLN
Co-financing: 3 827 141,04 PLN
Investment by LUG Light Factory Sp. z o.o.:
Eligible expenses: 2 660 246,41 PLN
Co-financing: 1 729 160,17 PLN (65%)
The project is co-financed by the National Center for Research and Development from national funds under the Smart Growth Operational Programme 2014-2020 - Measure 4.1. Scientific research and development work.
The goal of the project is to develop a new, safe pole integrated with an innovative lighting fixture, which is a, so-called, safe lighting point (BPO). The main challenge of the project is to design a lighting fixture featuring: the latest solutions in lighting technology, modern method of mounting it on the pole and a safe lighting pole with enhanced design parameters improving passive and active road safety. Research activities (industrial research and application development ) will be carried out in 3 stages, starting from building a research team, developing new solutions and functionality of a lighting point, ending with crash tests, carried out in real-life conditions on a crash track. The project started in June last year and will last 26 months. The project initiated close scientific collaboration (also with the Rzeszów University of Technology), popularized research results and provided 4 patent applications. The project is carried out under a syndicate of LUG Light Factory Sp. z o.o., ELEKTROMONTAŻ RZESZÓW S.A. and a research unit - the Road and Bridge Research Institute (IBDiM) from Warsaw.
LUG carries out the first stage of the project related to industrial research on developing an innovative lighting fixture, ELEKTROMONTAŻ RZESZÓW S.A. carries out the second stage, including research on the pole, while the Institute gets involved in development work validating the solutions developed in real conditions, i.e. crash tests.
PROJECT
Innovative set of specialised light fittings supporting smart management system - from research to prototypes
Co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund
Priority Axis 1 „Economy and Innovation”
Measure 1.1. „Research and innovation”
Project No: RPLB.01.01.00-08-0076/16
Realization: 2017 – 2018
Signing of co-financing agreement at the Marshal's Office of the Lubusz Voivodeship:26 May 2017

At the end of 2018, LUG Light Factory Sp. z o.o. - a leading manufacturer of professional lighting fixtures and light management systems - completed research and development task as part of the project entitled: "Innovative set of specialised light fittings supporting smart management system - from research to prototypes", implemented as part of the Priority Axis 1. Economy and innovation, Measure 1.1 Research and innovation of the Regional Operational Program - Lubuskie 2020, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
Why such a project?
The latest scientific research in the world in the lighting industry indicates the need to improve space lighting (external and internal) with the use of smart lighting control systems to improve comfort and safety of users. LUG Light Factory Sp. z o.o. is constantly searching for innovative solutions in the field of lighting betterment, combining traditional needs of customers with technological advances in the industry, at the same time ensuring a balance between light quality and energy efficiency.
What was created in the wake of the project?
46 prototypes of new lighting fixtures were developed and prepared for production in the wake of the project, amongst them 26 applications of industrial design, prepared for intellectual property protection, and 4 European patent applications, mainly related to construction solutions utilized in new luminaires. The fittings have been designed using the latest developments in lighting technology, with particular emphasis on high luminous efficiency, durability and, above all, efficiency; combining the anticipated functionality with an innovative design. Designed luminaires can be used in industrial, office, hall, road or medical lighting environments.
Implementation into production
Most of the prototypes of lighting fixtures that have been created as part of the project are ready-made products implemented into production
Smart solutions
The project also included studies on possible communication systems between luminaires, in an effort to develop new solutions in the field of smart lighting. The purpose of the research and development works was to create a smart controller prototype. As part of the work, a number of communication solutions already existing on the market was tested, but, according to LUG, none of the tested solutions was satisfactory enough. Case study analysis confirmed that in order for the system works satisfactorily, a holistic solution which guarantees basic functionality regardless of the availability of the communication network, is needed, while ensuring a maximum system responsiveness during properly functioning communication. Starting from this assumption, it is best if the system components are designed as complementary devices that, when used together (as a complete system), will have the highest efficiency and provide the highest value for the customer. The smart driver developed by LUG within this project and this development model, is a product ideally suited to the Smart City system, which is developed by a subsidiary of LUG - BIOT Sp. z o.o. and entity specially established for this purpose. The new smart driver contains all the latest technologies used in this class of devices, available on the market. It is prepared for cooperation with any Smart City controller in common communication standards. In addition, when used with a dedicated smart light controller, the driver controls the correct operation of the controller itself, as well as it includes advanced auto-diagnostic systems that allow to evaluate its own operation.
Stages of the project
Research and development works were completed in four stages. They included among others: construction of R&D team, development of a new functionality of lighting fixtures and a communication system between luminaires, design of these elements; followed by validation of the applied solutions, up to in-service implementation tests of prototypes in the real operational environment and installations for testing and demonstrating purposes.
Summary
30 employees of the R&D Division participated in the project. Research and development activities lasted nearly two years. The total value of the project amounted to almost PLN 13 million, while the level of co-financing reached over 40% of eligible expenses.
